How to Choose the Right Summer Camp
A simple guide to finding a camp your child will love.
For many families, summer camp is one of the highlights of the year. Kids get a break from the classroom, spend more time outdoors, meet new friends, and try activities they might never experience during the school year.
But with so many camps available today — from arts and science camps to sports, theater, robotics, and outdoor adventure programs — choosing the right one can feel overwhelming.
The good news is that finding the right fit doesn’t have to be complicated. A few key questions can help narrow the options and make the decision much easier.
Start with your child’s interests
The best summer camps build on things kids already enjoy — or give them a chance to explore something new.
Ask your child what sounds fun to them this summer. Do they want to spend their days playing sports? Creating art? Acting on stage? Learning to code? Building robots?
Some kids love traditional camps that offer a mix of activities, while others thrive in specialized programs that focus on one skill or interest.
Decide what type of camp works best
Summer camps come in many different formats, and the right choice often depends on your child’s age and personality.
- Day camps – Kids attend during the day and return home in the evening.
- Overnight camps – Children stay overnight for several days or weeks.
- Specialty camps – Focus on a specific interest like dance, sports, art, STEM, or theater.
- Adventure or travel camps – Older kids may travel or participate in outdoor experiences.
For many families, day camps are a great starting point, especially for younger children.
Consider location and schedule
Another important factor is how camp fits into your family's schedule.
Some camps run for a full day, while others offer half-day programs. Some last a single week, while others run for most of the summer.
Think about transportation, daily schedules, and whether extended care is needed before or after camp hours.
Choosing a camp close to home or work can make drop-off and pickup much easier during busy summer weeks.
Ask questions before registering
Once you've narrowed down a few camps, don't hesitate to ask questions. Most camp directors are happy to provide details about their programs.
You may want to ask about:
- Staff training and supervision
- Camper-to-counselor ratios
- Safety policies and emergency procedures
- A typical daily schedule
- Refund or cancellation policies
If possible, talk to other parents who have sent their kids to the camp before. Personal recommendations can be incredibly helpful.
Remember: every child is different
Not every camp will be the perfect fit for every child — and that's completely normal.
One child might thrive in a sports camp full of competition and activity, while another might prefer an art studio or theater program where creativity takes center stage.
The goal is simply to find a place where your child feels comfortable, excited, and supported while trying new things and making new friends.
